On the opening weekend of the new Premier League season, Wolves were wrongly denied a penalty and the chance to equalise against Manchester United in stoppage time after Andre Onana collided with Sasa Kalajdzic. Howard Webb, the chief refereeing officer at Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) later apologised on behalf of the match officials for failing to award a spot-kick.

Gary O'Neil's side went on to lose 1-0 against the Red Devils and Webb promised to 'learn' from the blunder. Fast forward a couple of months and PGMOL have failed to show any sign of improvement after Robert Sanchez got away with a similar incident when Chelsea locked horns with Arsenal on Saturday night.

The Blues goalkeeper appeared to clatter both his own teammate Levi Colwill and Gunners striker Gabriel Jesus, with Alan Shearer describing the challenge as 'terrible'. In August analysing Onana's challenge, Webb said: "Onana jumps into the Wolves player.

"Kalajdzic is just jumping up and not into Onana, so it's not two players coming together – it's one player going into the other. In the end, we didn't recommend a review.

"We should've done. We acknowledge that as an error in the opening week, which of course is disappointing. We took the learning from that and (will) obviously try going forward to ensure that type of error doesn't happen again."

Speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer explained why he believes the on-field referee, Chris Kavanagh, should have awarded Arsenal a penalty. The former Newcastle United striker said: "Sanchez has just come out and he wipes Jesus out.

"What is key for me is that he catches him in the head. Look, he goes right through him here. It's a terrible challenge. How on earth can the VAR not think that's a penalty and the referee? He is nowhere near the ball. They should have had a penalty, there is no doubt about it."

Sanchez was also at fault for Arsenal's first goal when Declan Rice lobbed the Chelsea shot-stopper from range. Shearer added: "What on earth is he (Sanchez) doing there? I haven't got a clue. Just clear it and get rid of it."
